I was introduced to waist beads while preparing to marry my Ghanaian husband. What began as an intimate expression of my love for him awakened something deeper within me. Wearing them made me feel more sensual, more feminine, and more beautiful. I became captivated by the artistry, symbolism, and African tradition woven into every strand.

My fascination grew even deeper in Ghana, where I learned to make traditional Ghanaian waist beads and ventured through Makola Market in search of the materials that would eventually become part of this story. Surrounded by beauty, color, and possibility, I fell in love with the creative process—and the joy of imagining what I could make next. I was inspired to share my designs with other women in hopes that wearing them might make them feel just as feminine, expressive, and connected to themselves in their own way.

I was also rediscovering my earliest passion. As a little girl, making beaded jewelry was one of my first forms of creative expression—and my first taste of entrepreneurship. I returned to it again in my twenties, and now, decades later, that same creative spark has found me once more—this time with a deeper connection to myself.

Looking back, I don't believe it was a coincidence. Some passions have a way of finding us again and again, leading us toward people and places we never imagined—and sometimes, closer to who we've always wanted to become.

Today, Adorned by Abena is a Ghanaian-inspired lifestyle brand inspiring women to live beautifully, express themselves fully, reach toward their highest possibilities, and experience life on their own terms.
